How to Check Battery Health on iPhone and Android

Where to find battery health on iPhone, Pixel and Samsung Galaxy, what the numbers mean, and when a replacement makes sense.

Sebaraya Tech – Your phone dies by mid-afternoon when it used to last until bedtime. Before blaming an app, check the battery’s health: iPhone, Google Pixel, and Samsung Galaxy all have a built-in way to show how worn it is.

Every lithium-ion battery loses capacity as it ages, so some decline is normal. The useful question is how far along yours is, and whether it’s time for a replacement.

What Battery Health Means

Battery health compares how much charge your battery can hold now with how much it held when new. A reading of 90% means a full charge gives you roughly 90% of the original capacity.

Manufacturers design batteries to keep about 80% of their capacity after a set number of charge cycles. A cycle means using energy equal to 100% of the battery’s capacity, even if you spread it over several partial charges.

PhoneDesign target
iPhone 14 and earlierabout 80% after 500 cycles
iPhone 15 modelsabout 80% after 1,000 cycles
Pixel 3 to Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel Foldabout 80% after 800 cycles
Pixel 8a and laterabout 80% after 1,000 cycles

These figures come from Apple and Google and assume ideal conditions. Heat and heavy use can wear a battery faster.

Check Battery Health on iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Tap Battery Health.

Look at Maximum Capacity. A brand-new iPhone can show slightly under 100% if it sat in storage before you activated it, so 98% out of the box isn’t a defect.

The same screen tells you whether the battery supports normal peak performance. If your iPhone shut down unexpectedly, iOS may apply performance management to prevent it happening again. You can turn that off, but you can’t switch it back on yourself; it returns if another shutdown happens.

Check Battery Health on Pixel

On Pixel 8a and newer, go to Settings > Battery > Battery health. For the estimated capacity number, tap Battery capacity on that screen.

The status reads Normal, Reduced, or Unavailable. Reduced means capacity has dropped below 80%, and Google suggests considering a replacement.

To see your cycle count, open Settings > About phone > Battery information. Older models such as Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 don’t show a health status.

Pixel 6a and later can gradually lower the battery’s maximum voltage, starting at 200 cycles and continuing up to 1,000. It trades a little runtime for a longer-lasting battery, which is a sensible deal if you keep phones for several years.

Check Battery Health on Samsung Galaxy

Samsung puts the check inside its Samsung Members app rather than the main Settings menu.

  1. Open Samsung Members and tap the Support tab.
  2. Tap Get Started to open the diagnostics.
  3. Select Battery status and read the result.

Samsung notes that menu names vary by model and software version. If you can’t find the option, update the Samsung Members app first.

When to Replace the Battery

There’s no single cutoff, but 80% is a useful marker: both Google and Apple build their design targets around it, and Pixel flags anything below it as Reduced.

On iPhone, a “significantly degraded” message isn’t a safety warning, according to Apple, but it does mean a replacement will restore runtime. If you see “Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple battery,” the health reading may not be accurate.

On Galaxy, a battery degradation alert in the diagnostics is your cue to visit a Samsung service center.

Stop using a phone whose battery is swelling, lifting the screen, or getting unusually hot, and take it to an authorized service center. Use the manufacturer’s own service or an authorized provider, so the replacement part is the right one.

Check your battery health once now and note the number. Checking again in six months tells you more than any single reading.
